About Setana

A town that values friendships; Setana

Setana Town was formed in 2005 by the merger of Setana Town of Setana County, Kitahiyama Town of Setana County, and Taisei Town of Kudo County. This new town full of attractive features of the sea and mountains has many powerful and attractive spots. Such spots include its many coastlines lined with uniquely shaped rocks, which look different depending on the occasion, Otasan Shrine (Hokkaido's oldest mountain holy ground), and plateaus where seasonal flowers bloom. Kazamidori windmills, Japan's first wind power generators built on the sea, keep watch over the town's nature. Strong winds blowing against Setana are now creating the future for our children. In this town rich in fruits from the sea, the evening market, which is held on the fourth Sunday of the month and where ship captains directly sell the marine products they catch that day, is also very popular.

03Shrine with 550 years of history Otasan Shrine

Mt. Otasan (height: 485 m), which is known for its sheer cliff, is one of five sacred places in southern Hokkaido. Located here is Otasan Shrine, the oldest mountain holy ground in Hokkaido, believed to ensure the safety of journeys across the sea and provide deity protection. It is said that this shrine was built in the Kakitsu era (1441 - 1443) and that Nobuhiro Takeda, the founder of the Matsumae Domain, received the honorific title of Ota Daigongen when he landed in Ota in 1454. The path from the shrine gate to the main hall is extremely rough, so visitors should be fully prepared for climbing it. The stunning view of the Sea of Japan and Okushiri Island spread out below will catch your eye as you turn around after visiting the main hall.
