About Imakane

A town where you can truly experience slow life; Imakane

A utopia blessed with beautiful clear rivers and fertile land - this is Imakane. There are many rivers and lakes of high water quality that were once a place of dreams for many miners who came to pan for gold long ago. Gold panning can still be experienced free of charge at the Shiribeshi-Toshibetsu River, which has been selected as Japan's clearest river many times. Different varieties of seasonal river fish can be observed at Pirika Dam, which is the largest dam in Hokkaido. The beautiful natural surroundings here are like the Garden of Eden, of which Christians who landed here long ago once dreamed. Ginko Ogino, Japan's first female doctor, was one of them. The Imakane Iitokoro Festival in August is lined with stalls selling local specialty items, allowing visitors to enjoy the local tastes all at once.

Spend a blissful time and relieve your mind in this utopia everyone dreamed about

01Feel the spirit of adventure through history. Immanuel Church

This is a church standing in the woods on Immanuel Hill. Christians, including Japan's first female doctor, Ginko Ogino, and her husband, Yukiyoshi Shikata, who settled in Imakane looking for a new world, built this small church on the land where they dreamed of establishing a utopia. Immanuel means “God is with us” in Hebrew. This church helps us honor the efforts of everyone who prayed and worked the land despite the difficulties they faced in those days.

02Japan's largest composite dam Pirika Dam

Pirika Dam was completed in 1991 as the largest multi-purpose dam in the Southern Hokkaido area to serve four roles: flood control, maintenance of the normal function of flowing water, supply of irrigation water and power generation. This dam measuring 1,480 m in length is the largest composite dam in the country comprised of a concrete gravity dam (755 m) and a rock-fill dam (725 m). There is a 2,400 m fish passage around the dam that is the longest of its kind in Japan and has windows from which seasonal fish such as Yamame trout and Japanese dace can be seen.

03It may sound as if we are bragging, but this is the No.1 river in Japan. Shiribeshi-Toshibetsu River

According to the annual water quality survey, which has been conducted since 1987, the Shiribeshi-Toshibetsu River ranked at the top as the clearest river in Japan several dozens of times, boasting its purity.
In this clean river, fish from 23 species of 10 families have been confirmed and there are many migratory fish traveling across rivers and oceans such as cherry salmon. It is indeed the mother river to Imakane.

04Despite being named Danshaku (barons), these potatoes are actually Kifujin (ladies). Danshaku potato field

The quality of Imakane Danshaku potatoes is so high that the prices of Danshaku potatoes for the year are set based on the price of Imakane Danshaku. One of the factors helping to increase the sweetness of potatoes is the difference in temperature between day and night. The rich soil containing large amounts of starch along the clear Shiribeshi-Toshibetsu River is also well suited for potato cultivation. Imakane Danshaku potatoes are popular in the Kanto Area not only for their taste but also their beautiful shape.
